The Denver Digs Trees program is only open to planting addresses in the City & County of Denver. But, you can still shop our yard tree sale for great deals . Saturday, Sept 12, 11:30am - 1pm, open to the public, first come, first-served.
There may be other options for you too, so please drop us a line at info@theparkpeople.org with any questions. We'd love to help you find a way to plant some roots!

The Denver Digs Trees program is open to any address in Denver, including single family homes, apartments or condos, schools*, affordable housing communities and more. In order to apply for a tree, you must be authorized to plant a tree on the property you are applying for. Please call the office or email jess@theparkpeople.org with more questions.

*To plant at a Denver Public School you must be a DPS employee, get permission to plant a Park People tree, submit a Facilities Modification Request and take full responsibility for year-round care of the tree(s).

A few simple site preparations are required to participate in the program

We want to make sure your tree is set up to thrive. Right now it looks like one or more of these hasn't been confirmed yet:

Having enough room for a tree to to grow, and making sure you have permission to plant if you don't own the property.
Calling 811 before digging (safety first! Plus, it's the law — nobody wants a shocking surprise underground!)
Clearing out any old stumps, and rock mulch from the area. Rock mulch can stunt the growth of your tree. It creates hotter and drier landscapes and can compact the soil, making it very tough for young trees to grow.

Treeship Application

The Park People believe that financial constraints shouldn't prevent anyone from planting and enjoying the benefits of trees! If you are experiencing economic hardship, check this box to request trees free of charge. Treeships are made possible by the generous donations of others! If you'd like to support the Denver tree canopy, please consider adding a donation when you submit your application.

Treeships are reviewed and awarded on a rolling basis.

Disclaimer: There will be a $15 per tree deposit hold while The Park People review your application. If your Treeship application is approved, the hold on your card will be refunded. If your Treeship application is denied, you will be charged for the trees on your request OR You may cancel before Sept 1 to receive a full refund.

There is a 3 tree limit per treeship application.

The Treeship program is designed to help individual households who face financial barriers to buying a tree. Because resources are limited, we ask that you only apply if you are in need of this assistance, allowing us to support families who need it most.

Treeships are only awarded to individual residential households. They cannot be used for HOAs, schools, or other organizations. Are you applying for your individual household?

Please do not apply for more trees than you have room to plant. Enter the number of each tree you would like to plant in either your front or backyard.

Apply for your first choice of species only.

You may indicate alternate species you would be willing to accept at the end of the application.

NOTE: If the species you want is marked "SOLD OUT" and you do not want another species, you will be placed on a waitlist. The more flexible you are about the species you will accept, the better chances are that we can approve your application.

You will be refunded for any trees that we cannot grant.

Striking and hardy conifer tolerant of heat, cold, drought, salts, and poor soils. Symmetrical form and dense foliage work as an accent or screening. Plant evergreens on the north side of homes to maximize winter screening and solar gain.

Fragrant pink blossoms in early spring followed by sweet, juicy fruit. Great for fresh eating, canning, baking, or freezing. Tolerant of spring frosts, meaning more reliable fruiting. Self-pollinating and ripens mid-to-late summer.

Crisp, sweet-tart fruit. Pink and white spring blossoms, with vibrant red and yellow apples in the fall. Thrives in well-drained soil and full sunlight. Cold hardy and resistant to many common diseases, a great choice for Denver.

Decorative hop-like pods form in spring, becoming papery and ornamental in fall.  Attractive, gray-brown bark forms vertical strips that exfoliate providing year round interest. Strong wood, pest resistant and drought tolerant.

Intense deep pink flowers in early spring, followed by small dark red fruit that attracts wildlife and birds. Early reddish-purple leaves and mature to dark green. Excellent ornamental specimen tree with strong disease resistance.

Fragrant, white flowers in spring. Bright green summer leaves turn golden yellow in fall. Yellow heartwood gives this hardy tree it's name. Attractive grey bark is smooth and thin, tree wrap in winter is highly recommended.  Prune in summer only.

Bright green, maple-like leaves complement attractive mottled bark in shades of cream, olive and brown. Tolerant of poor soils, pollution, heat and drought. This fast-growing tree needs ample root space and is best suited to medium or large yards.
