Scholarships and Your Valuable Volunteer Time: The Community Forester program is actively seeking to expand and diversify in every neighborhood in Denver. We don't want cost to be a barrier. If you want to learn about tree care to help take care of trees in your neighborhood, then please consider applying for the Sue Cannon Scholarship. In return, we ask for your volunteer time with us, the city, or with our Community Connectors, caring for and growing your neighborhood forest.

Volunteering as a Community Forester: Committing your valuable time

The Community Workshop series is a critical investment in building the The Park People's capacity to meet our urban forestry goals. Once trained, you'll be an important part of being able to complete skilled planting and stewardship tasks. Do you commit to volunteer your time with The Park People's programs?

Yes, I commit to volunteer with The Park People to care for our urban forest.No, I am taking these classes for work or personal enrichment only.

We offer tiered pricing and scholarships:

Volunteer Track:

$25/class or $100 for all five workshops.

For those who plan volunteer for at least 10 hours per year with The Park People. Upon completion you will receive Community Forester Badge, Official Park People Nametag and Community Forester Vest.

Volunteer Track - Scholarship:

Sue Cannon Scholarship available on a sliding scale.

For those with financial limitations, who plan to volunteer at least 10 hours a year with The Park People and/or our Community Connectors to care for your neighborhood trees. Upon completion you will receive Community Forester Badge, Official Park People Nametag and Community Forester Vest.

Professional Development, Personal Enrichment and Organizations Track:
$65/class or $300/all five. For those taking the workshops as part of their work, or taking the workshops for personal enrichment and who do not plan to volunteer with us. Upon completion of all five workshops, you will receive a Badge in Community Forestry. Our Community Forester curriculum is research-based and developed over years of partnership with Denver's Department of Parks & Recreation; thank you for understanding why there is a fee to professionals and organizations that would like to apply the benefits of these best practices in their own work.

Workshop Makeup:
For those who registered for workshop(s) in 2023 or 2024, but had to cancel their attendance, and would like to make up that workshop(s) in 2025. If you registered in 2022 or earlier, please plan to pay $25 per workshop. Thank you.

Tree Planting & Health - Saturday, April 8th - 9am to 1pm

Proper planting techniques and common tree health issues, disease and pest management, and tree health resources. Field component included.

Tree Pruning - Saturday, May 3rd - 9am to 1pm

Why, what, when, and how to properly prune a young tree to promote strong structure and long-term health. Field component included.

Tree ID & Inventory - Saturday, June 21st - 9am to 1pm

Learn Denver's common tree species and develop a toolkit for identifying them in the field. Field component included.

Volunteer Leadership & Community Engagement - Saturday, July 12th - 9am to 12:30pm

Tips and tools to engage with community members and lead other volunteers in activities for which you’ve been trained

Classes are held at various locations and incorporate a mix of classroom and field based work. We will also provide light refreshments at each workshop. Do you have any physical considerations or allergies we should be aware of?
